C-V2X Technology and its Commercialisation

Cellular vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology is developed within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard designed to achieve vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), vehicle-to-network (V2N) and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communication, which has now rapidly gained popularity in the market. C-V2X would be especially essential for fully autonomous self-driving in the future of smart cities. According to 3GPP Release 14,C-V2X can be deployed in cases such as emergency vehicle warning, pre-crashsensing warning, road safety warning and collision warning.

C-V2X is applicable within the existing LTE network, which brings huge benefits in respect to cost-effectiveness and optimisation of resources. Studies shows that C-V2X has a wider coverage and higher spectral efficiency comparing with Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), at the same time allowing more transmit power with the same power amplifier, resulting in longer range and more reliable performance at the same range. In addition, the implementation of DSRC requires a greenfield infrastructure deployment, accompanying with the operation and maintenance of the road networks, while C-V2X technology can integrating with the already-widespread LTE infrastructure, enabling rapid rollouts at scale.

C-V2X is able to offer a native solution that can be used on a wide variety of devices involved in modern traffic. Integrating with 5G, C-V2X can better perform in mobility support and quality of service, warning drivers of roadwork, terrible weather condition and hazards, which can increase safety while lessen collisions as well as traffic jams. Therefore, pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users as well as drivers of any kind of vehicle can realise a higher levelof security.

Commercialising C-V2X is a positive business perspective for automakers, mobile telecomoperators, road operators and technology providers. Deploying C-V2X meets the demand of autonomous driving technologies, which is a revolutionary step towards the future smart cities. By supporting higher performance for capacity, coverage, range, scalability, number of devices and security, C-V2X enhances reliability for cooperative driving. When vehicles are connected, they are able to use their communication systems to receive and transmit data themselves, see obstructions in advance, and to drive without driver control.

Fibocom offers an automotive grade C-V2X module AX168 to satisfy the need of autonomous driving and intelligent transportation. The main chip of Fibocom AX168 C-V2X module integrates dual-core ARM Cortex A7 CPU with secure CAN MCU, which meets the second class standard of AEC Q-100 and supports a high operating temperature ranging from -40℃ to 85℃. Importantly, AX168 adopts C-V2X direct communications (PC5) interface,ultra-low-latency V2X Hardware Security Module (eHSM) as well as IEEE802.11p DSRC standard that optimized mobility.

With lower latency, higher reliability and high throughput, Fibocom’s AX168 C-V2X module satisfys high standard of automotive-grade communication. Due to its provision of abundant interfaces, vehicle manufactures and application developers can conveniently develop automotive applications including autonomous driving, advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) and intelligent transport system (ITS), which can greatly enhance driving safety and the management of modern traffic.
